Success On Your Own Terms

I’ve sat in homes with over 1000 people from all walks of life from the millionaires to those that live on the estate. One thing I’ve found they have in common is that they are all successful in their own ways. The single mum on the estate whose raised two wonderful children; to the stock broker who worked all hours that God gives to be the best in the company. The guy who lived in the library and graduated with honours to the woman who fought her way out of a drug addiction she never thought she could.

Success has different meaning to different people. Benchmarking success against another person’s often leads to either pride or misery; None of which are attractive.

When I was much younger I used to watch secular music videos and I would think only if I get to that stage would I count myself successful. How messed up is that?!If music videos are our benchmark  then 99% of people upon this earth are unsuccessful.

As I’ve grown up I now realised what I consider success may not be success in someone else’s eyes and that too is okay.  Success in life has different meaning to all of us. Hence why we all pursue different things in life. You have to describe it your own terms. We weren’t all made to pursue or desire the same things in life. Be strong enough to pursue what you ultimately want. Although making lots of money isn’t a bad thing but there are lots of people out there who are who make lots of money but are miserable as hell. Clearly money isn’t the answer there has to be more.

“Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it.” Maya Angelou

“Success is peace of mind, which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best you are capable of becoming,” –Basketball coach John Wooden

Whatever your definition of success may be, don’t make the mistake of comparing it to anyone. You may chase what others have but but it will never make you feel the way they feel.Set success in your own terms and be wise enough to believe that that’s enough. If it’s what you want and you work your tail off to get it, be happy with what you have achieved regardless of what anyone says.

For the Christian, success in life is fulfilling your God-given purpose. If success was counted by how many followers you have, then Jesus Christ was the most unsuccessful he only had 12 followers. Success if having done all to stand and fighting the good fight of faith. At times your road to success may be a road less travelled but it’s worth it.

Know what you want out of life and chase it, all gun blazing.

Here’s to successful lives.
